Eigenvalues, eigenspaces and distances to subsets

چکیده

In this note we show how to improve and generalize some calculations of diameters and distances in sufficiently symmetrical graphs, by taking all the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of the graph into account. We present some applications of these results to the problem of finding tight upper bounds on the covering radius of error-correcting codes, when the weight distribution of the code (or the dual code) is known.

On Certain Eigenspaces of Cographs

For every cograph there exist bases of the eigenspaces for the eigenvalues 0 and −1 that consist only of vectors with entries from {0, 1,−1}, a property also exhibited by other graph classes. Moreover, the multiplicities of the eigenvalues 0 and −1 of a cograph can be determined by counting certain vertices of the associated cotree.

The Second Order Spectrum and Optimal Convergence

The method of second order relative spectra has been shown to reliably approximate the discrete spectrum for a self-adjoint operator. We extend the method to normal operators and find optimal convergence rates for eigenvalues and eigenspaces. The convergence to eigenspaces is new, while the convergence rate for eigenvalues improves on the previous estimate by an order of magnitude.
